I recommend searching for Trent Reznor's interviews. He doesn't divulge much about his composition process, but he does talk about his thought process in realizing the emotion or story behind the music, and occasionally how he produces the tracks. Some of it is in your face rock, some of is is moody, minimal piano solos with noise, some of it is rowdy dance music, some of it is heartbreaking ballads, some is industrial, the list goes on. But through it all, layering seems to be a key element of NIN music - drones, distortion, noise, broken sounds - out of tune, tape warping, synth leads with tons of overtones (airy sounding), playing instruments in ways they normally aren't, various guitar layers, lots of pulsation on a single note (layers of this). Trent Reznor (the mastermind behind NIN) uses sampling in a really creative way too, sampling movie dialogue and scores. He also likes to use a wide range of instruments, always looking for novelty. Programmed electronic drums certainly can't hurt and they often have a bit of a retro sound to me. Lots of piano - he started out as a trained pianist and learned guitar later.
