>So, am I just bad at searching or blind? No, albums are just not tagged by subject matter very frequently. There is a ton of fantasy metal at your disposal, but you might have to broaden your knowledge of fantasy literature. For instance, there is a ton of metal written about Conan the Barbarian (it's even become somewhat of a meme among my friends; we now moderate [this short playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0ViBCP2iBftujGfbllpbDW?si=bd45092a79c6460c) of song specifically about that world). But Robert E. Howard started writing that in the 50s, so it's not quite as recent as the stuff you are listing. Seven Kingdoms is a power metal band that started out writing songs almost exclusively about a *ASOIAF*. They've since branched out a bit, but still do songs about the series. Here's their 2017 release, [Decennium](https://open.spotify.com/album/56hNvxq730kvbuZqsKg7Ne?si=3SijW9owRXaGNGKG0_TDTw); it's pretty transparent that "Undying" is about >!Jon Snow!< , "Kingslayer" about >!Jamie Lannister!< , and "The Faceless Hero" about >!Arya Stark!< . But also on that album is "In The Walls," a favorite among my friends based off a Lovecraft Story, [*The Rats in the Walls*](https://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/rw.aspx). Their current line-up is great, I've seen them live twice and they always have a great time. But their old albums before they got their current singer are also good; one my favorite songs from that era is "We Do Not Sow." [Times of Obscene Evil and Wild Daring](https://smoulder.bandcamp.com/album/times-of-obscene-evil-and-wild-daring) by heavy metal outfit Smoulder explicitly references a series by C.J. Cherryh, The Morgaine Cycle. The series begins with *Gate of Ivrel*, but the album re-uses Michael Whelan's famous cover art from the second, [Well of Shiuan](https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?54190). Cirith Ungol obviously wrote songs about Tolkien, but "Master of the Pit" is most likely about the Michael Moorcock [book by the same name](https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?123621) (can't confirm, I haven't read it yet.). You could spend a whole week listening to music that Michael Moorcock influenced. Where do you think the heavy metal band [Eternal Champion](https://eternalchampion.bandcamp.com/album/the-armor-of-ire) gets its [name?](https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?981) [*Agents of Power*](https://trueskelator.bandcamp.com/album/agents-of-power) by power metal outfit Skelator is all about [Elric of Melniboné](https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?644), so is [The Chronicle of the Black Sword](https://open.spotify.com/album/2m0eTf0saceOBXpQS5KzEp?si=cdvrFqLJTJWmLpowOZdoNQ) by Hawkwind. In fact, each of Cirith Ungol's album covers are from Michael Whelan's cover art for books in that series ([source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirith_Ungol_(band)#Album_cover_art)). It's not all fiction books, either. Hoth predictably writes black/death songs about Star Wars Legends; my favorite album of theirs is [*Infinite* Darkness](https://hothmusic.bandcamp.com/album/infinite-darkness), which is a collection of tunes about various metal things appearing in the OT, but *Oathbreaker* is a concept album about Darth Vader and *Astral Necromancy* is the tale of Darth Plagueis the Wise. Judicator is one of my favorite power metal bands, and they write about history; [King of Rome](https://judicatormetal.bandcamp.com/album/king-of-rome) covers the Napoleonic crusade, and [Sleepy Plessow](https://judicatormetal.bandcamp.com/album/sleepy-plessow) the unification of the German states. [Planeswalker](https://planeswalkersozjas.bandcamp.com/track/the-forever-serpent), [Sallow Moth](https://sallowmoth.bandcamp.com/album/stasis-cocoon), and [Muldrotha](https://muldrotha.bandcamp.com/) write about Magic: the Gathering. And there is truly an untold number of bands writing about Warhammer 40K (though I think my favorite is [World Eaters](https://worldeaters.bandcamp.com/album/demo-mk-1)). So yeah, there are a ton of options, but I've had to learn a lot about fantasy literature and metal music history all in one. And frankly, I like referential works just as much as some of the original storytelling in the genre. Try not to get hooked on Unleash the Archer's saga of The Matriarch told through [their albums](https://unleashthearchers.bandcamp.com/album/apex). [Ayreon](https://open.spotify.com/album/2kaJOqAkerwkUF266TsyMp?si=0p6MDb4ET32rv5_-7hG04Q) is also an excellent storyteller, one of my favorite artists. Frankly, I get more TTRPG inspiration from [Bal-Sagoth](https://open.spotify.com/album/4jdH22liB7hdYCPjnpcXqr?si=KuflFjvTT3uixqr3Y06dNQ) and [Rhapsody](https://open.spotify.com/album/346aOAWcE17Sz9pqeENw4I?si=qY5Yz4LKQb2X1NbItMff3A) than many of the Forgotten Realms books I read. I just love a good story. This is the part where I plug my own playlist by saying "You can find all this **and more** on my [D&D Hype Mix](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1QZJu6uN32Zg1HfUP2QbwL?si=757e40be19a34570)." >Also, fuck JK Rowling. If you don't like her, wait til you learn about Burzum.
