You know how David and Griffin have often posited 1999 as like a nexus point in great cinema? Well I have frequently thought that the exact same thing is true of mainstream dance music in Europe. A convergence of societal trends pushed by the end of the millennium and the sudden emergence of dance music from the underground into the mainstream. This is a period in dance music that will never be repeated, because it has become such a crossover genre now in how pop music adopts it. And it'd be hard to spot now because "The Charts" have such a weak hold on popular culture compared to what it was like around the year 2000. Combine this with the differences in how we hear new music — in the UK and Ireland around this time, we had the MTV Dance channel which was both a symptom and a cause for the dance music explosion. What other time in history could you have Mr Oizo's *Flat Beat* topping the UK charts, the utter dominance of Fatboy Slim's *You've Come a Long Way Baby* and The Chemical Brothers' *Surrender,* the first filtering through of UK Garage from the Artful Dodger, and just ever other little top 10 tune being *Sweet Like Chocolate, King of My Castle, Sing it Back, You Don't Know Me, etc.* Just an absolutely incredible time to be into dance music. I made a Spotify Playlist of bangers from around 1999: [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0nze1b8YEwnawT9epy6TlR?si=2e5dd14dca254509](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0nze1b8YEwnawT9epy6TlR?si=2e5dd14dca254509)
