Stones album 1
Description
An "optimized" version of "England's Newest Hitmakers"––subtract a few of the weaker songs from that album and add a few non-album tracks recorded around the same time. Side 2 starts with "Carol."

I'm the same as you––Beatles are #1, Stones are #2 (or vying for that slot with Bob Dylan), and I definitely hear what you're saying about the Stones' early recordings. It seems like there wasn't any serious quality control applied to the playing, singing, writing, or mixing, especially in the 1963-65 period, and it makes me appreciate George Martin, his various engineers, and the Beatles themselves for making sure that almost no Beatles tracks feel like throwaways the way a lot of early Stones tracks do. That said, I still love the Stones' pre-1968 albums, especially once they started writing more of their own material. "Aftermath" and "Between the Buttons" are still marred by some filler-seeming songs, and maybe their production isn't worthy of comparison to "Sgt. Pepper," but the mono mixes sound awesome (much better than the more popular stereo versions, and available on Spotify), and I think most of the tracks on each album are incredible. And even the 1963-65 albums, the ones that are mostly covers and often incredibly sloppy, are a lot of fun to listen to. As a musician myself, I find them inspiring––it's reassuring to hear the Stones trying a lot of experiments (many of them failures, in my opinion) on their way to finding their identity. A few viewing/listening recommendations that you might be interested in: \- Recording engineer Glyn Johns talking about mono vs. stereo with regard to the early Stones: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17HPqK9HgH8&t=1s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17HPqK9HgH8&t=1s) \- Some Spotify playlists I've made of "optimized" versions of the Stones' 1963-67 albums, to make the point that if you sift through the filler and include some tracks that were non-album singles and B-sides, there was a LOT of Beatles-level great material in there. In fact, a lot of the time, I'd rather listen to these "albums" than the albums that the Beatles were putting out at the same time.
