The timing of this post, unbelievable. For so many years I've been listening to 80s/90s and some 00s rap (mainly 90s), so I can recommend some of my favourite rappers (Nas, Big Pun, Biggie, etc.). Bonus story, I used to play Saints Row 2 when I was younger, and Nas' N.Y. State of Mind was on there and I used to blast that. In year 10 when I was getting into rap, I listened to Nas' music, and I remember clearly. So I'm sitting there in computing, listening to a Nas playlist, then N.Y. State of Mind plays, I was so amazed because I had forgotten about it for all those years but still knew the song, it was like meeting a friend from 7 years ago. Another coincidence is that my brother used to listen to him too, so I heard Nas' other music when I was younger without realising, and when I heard those songs again (Got Ur self a gun... + I Can) it was the same amazement. Then, around the start of year 12 (I'm in year 13 now), I found this song: https://youtu.be/CRHyBwNtkLA And I listened to it a few times. Then 2 days ago, I came across it again and realised how I hadn't listened to it in a while so I played it. Then I started looking at the woman's music that's sampled (the lady you hear singing in the background), I knew her name, Sade, but I never listened to her music. So I searched for her music on YouTube, first song: Smooth Operator. Besides rap, I've always listened to 70s and 80s music because 1) it's good 2) also good for samples. If you're unfamiliar, sampling is when you take any sound from another song and use it in your own song, be it a sound, beat, or vocals. I normally listen to David Bowie (legend), Phil Collins and many other 80s artists. But as soon as I listened to Sade's music the other day, it changed. Her music is perfect for samples, and perfect in general. I recommend this playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/spotify/playlist/37i9dQZF1DZ06evO2piM6c?si=k-D_Ak_iSrGHBQDu5pJ6YA Another thing I want to add is that different songs and albums help me reminisce about specific times. For example, when I was doing my GCSEs, I used to listen to Mobb Deep's The Infamous, and now when I listen to that album, it reminds me of being in year 11 again.
