I recently started a passion project to build a fictional world, and [I am creating a Youtube-podcast](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDrWeXEp9xdj9toSfAJAFNw) with episodes of a fictional historical atlas about the various cultures and how they thought about life and the world. I am approaching the project rather systematically, so I have started to create a little setup with different tools and methods to go about this, and thought I might just share that here, would be interesting to hear others' experiences. **INSPIRATION** Obviously, the works of others are a big inspiration, and I have assembled a reading list [here](https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/130493498-leo-leonis?ref=nav_mybooks&shelf=inspiration) which however slants more strongly towards the philosophical underpinnings of my approach than fictional works. Perhaps more interestingly, I have found music to be a strong and underappreciated worldbuilding medium because it conveys semantic and emotive ideas in a somewhat universal and direct language. Consequently, I started composing own stuff, but also to listen more actively to the [works of others](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3SBqn3p9YViFdFXkDC6ED5), not as background playlists when working, but as sources of ideas and impressions. **EXPERIMENTATION** When it comes to creative explorations, I have started using different notebooks for different purposes, which are each tailored to making the specific task efficient and enjoyable, meaning I use a sketchbook for quick, messy drawings and a music notebook with staff lines to jot down musical ideas. For the conceptual ideas, I use an A4 notebook and I have started to assemble [a toolkit](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XNRDUbWEAmE7xGpKr-p8cW1E4Pft3vgJ/view) with creative exercises to approach the worldbuilding systematically. Finally, I have two little books to note down worldbuilding related ideas and general thoughts, which are self-made and which aren’t supposed to be rigid or systematic, they’re just these beautiful little gems so that it’s enjoyable to fill them with personal ideas. **PRODUCTION** Besides getting into traditional media and using the project to get an understanding of traditional art & music, I have decided to use free software only. I have found GIMP, Inkscape, and Blender to work really well for most purposes in visual art, and they are all open source! For the composition I use Musescore and Cakewalk for the production, and then finally Audacity and Da Vinci to make videos that make the worldbuilding accessible for others. I talk about all this and the methodology behind it in [this video](https://youtu.be/5ATmK4bl7AE).
