I did a bit of research there a while back, so i think this is the high level.... First off, here's the gold mine for you \[the instrumental of the album\] [https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4T6swsf9iojTpjcoLavCAU](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4T6swsf9iojTpjcoLavCAU) \- They make a lot of space by playing with M/S. I know it's not In Return but if you listen to their 'Faded' remix, the synths on the drop are pretty much just on the side. The mid is where the subby kick and snare rule, and the chops. It seems like the synth is lower and high passed in mono. My guess is most "space" is by pushing secondary elements to the side so the main percussive elements and chops sit in the middle. \- Layering drums is the biggest factor i think.... Sounds like they usually use a sub-ish kick (short 808 or so), and layer some stomp on top. Either that or a flat out 808 like in Bloom. IIRC they recorded things like dropping sand bags on tables and used that as percussive layers. So consider adding foley stomps on top of your subby kick. You can find a lot of good foley samples on splice. Just get a solid base kick to put stuff on top of. Processing is important too, there's a lot of distortion in their elements. Snares, iirc, are usually a snappy snare with a bunch of distortion. Layered with a reverb tail if it's the main snare. Layer foley elements too, leaf crunching/etc. They probably use 808-ish claps too in that album. Try distorting claps. Considering they have drumlines it's also possible you can find drumline audio and sample that and put it in you songs. Re: Synth morphing -- I dk, just have to play with this. Obviously a LOT of sidechaining on kick/snare/ghost signals, and tastefully placing synth hits on the kick/snare/etc. Mindful layering, usually a standard detuned synth playing chords to carry the base, and the high end with sprinkly arps or bells. They don't have standard "leads" which makes a lot of space in the mix. Dissect the album above. i think it's available on soundcloud and youcan download it and throw it in your daw.
