*Four Thieves Gone* is often overlooked in the Avett’s catalogue, despite having some incredibly strong, classic songs. Its biggest sin is that it runs a few songs too long, and those songs are some of their career’s worst. I think folks would consider it as strong as Mignonette and Emotionalism if the album had simply omitted “Pretty Girl from Feltre”, “Matrimony”, “Dancing Daze” and “40 East” and moved “Famous Flower of Manhattan” to follow “Sixteen in July” (or even replace it entirely). "40 East" has a pretty melody and instrumentation, but the lyrics and vocals are some of their worst. (No offense, Bob.) It would be better as an instrumental. 3/10
