Well, I'm a huge fan of both Zappa and the Dead, and I find it really hard to compare them as their music is defiantly very contrasting to each others. I discovered Zappa before the Grateful Dead, and still rate his music as some of the best out there, he is up there for one of my favourites no doubt, but I would say I rate the Dead just as highly. I find their music to be fantastic. I think a major difference is that I'd rather listen to Live Dead rather than studio (as I assume most would) whereas I'd prefer studio Zappa (A token of his extreme would be one of my favourites though). Have to say that I'd consider Jerry (credit to the rest of the band also) and Zappa to be both up there on the Mount Rushmore of improvisational greats. I'd love to hear some other opinions!
