They were already in Legacy Touring Band phase but now they're in that "put out new music as an excuse to tour" phase. There's always something a bit sadder about the former as there's no new contribution, even if you know the new material would certainly suck (and new GNR does indeed suck). As for modern rock landscape? No idea. A quick browsing through the [top Modern Rock songs](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6GWWkdTI6sT7oQV9j8VCWd#_=_) (linking spotify because Billboard wants money to look at this shit?) and I'm not sure it would really be that different from all the shitty butt rock that's making up most of the chart.
