How do you do my fellow popheads, it's me, an elderly black millennial lol. The indieheads and popheads rates has got me THINKIN, so warning for a long-ass post. I was a teenage indiehead and secret pophead, and in college vice-versa, so it's been so fun this weekend seeing the rates! I'm not a huge popheads user so I wasn't sure if I could super participate. I've never posted in indieheads so doubtful I could've suggested songs. But boy, I would've suggested SO MANY OTHER songs for the indieheads, probably cuz I was a 00's indie kid who was 14 in New Jersey when Garden State Dropped lmao. Also I know some of my faves were disqualified (Mitski namely) so I won't include them :) \- I am ...... not thrilled MGMT was #1 lol. I've been trying to think about what other songs could have dethroned this. I was thinking of what songs are a) recent-ish b) pop-adjacent, catchy and anthemic and the best I can think of are two different Perfume Genius songs (Slip Away or Queen) or Santigold (Les Artistes or Disparate Youths). My Case for Slip Away: When I first heard Driver's License something about it reminded me of Slip Away and I couldn't put my finger on it. Probably the dynamics. I think there's some shared DNA in Lorde's anthemic moody pop and the anthemic, arena rock of Bruce Springsteen which Perfume Genius was directly channelling. So maybe the Silent Majority of popheads who love Driver's License would have picked that. But idk maybe this is me being Always Sunny Charlie Conspiracy Wall.gif Here are random thoughts I'm trying to order, basically If I Were an Indiehead and if you haven't checked these out, please do! :) I was gonna hyperlink my suggestions but I'm short for time, so they're generally in this [playlist I made today](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0IYnQpGnJl8mdwfhkzfQpE?si=0de0b3c3cdb340bd). This is a lot of armchair quarterbacking sorry, but as a millennial all I know how to be is effusive and annoying lol. Also I'll note some of the Flirty-Approved songs (cough-h\*rny-cough lmao) to prove us former indieheads can have fun :) **"My Eternal Quest as a Black Woman to Diversify the Milquetoast Indie Space"** \- There could've been waaaay more 00's dance-punk beyond LCD Soundsystem. Gossip's Heavy Cross! Santigold! Le Tigre! \- The Canadian or just more women indie pop erasure. The Rilo Kiley?! Jenny Lewis's solo work??? Feist?! \- Bilingual Faves the indieheads ain't ready for, or forgotten -- with the Dudes with Guitars genre, at least Devendra Banhart has very groovy bops in English and Spanish. Y La Bamba is another great bilingual fave. In no world were the indieheads gonna recommend J-Rock or J-Pop but Shiina Ringo and Judy & Mary are great classics. \- "Germ Free Adolescents" by X-Ray Spex--Great punk band. the rest of their music is probably not pophead-friendly but this is a great mellow reggae-inspired number. Riot grrl was started in the 70's by a black woman, you love to see it! \- Noisier riot girl from like Sleater Kinney! Turn it On and Oh! are Flirty-Approved bangers y'all! \- My case for some sad, slow, lo-fi shit: The Moldy Peaches, with Kimya Dawson, of course has the famous song Anyone Else But You from Juno but "Nothing Came Out" is one of my favorite cathartic sadcry songs! \- I hope we've all been indoctrinated by Mitski, Solange and Kacey Musgraves to be cowboys-- Cold, Cold Water by Mirah is a great moody, compelling but slower song! **"They Should Have Picked This Song mentions"** \- "Lazy Line Painter Jane" by Belle and Sebastian is a great number. Guest vocals by this woman Monica Queen are amazing. Very catchy and anthemic for being a low-key 90's indie number. \- Howwww did they not pick "My Girls" by Animal Collective? Literally their most pop-friendly song haha \- "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" - Okay, Neutral Milk Hotel is not for everyone, they're a meme, and maybe there's a "Helps if you Grew up in the 90's" thing, but at least the title track is very pretty and not was lo-fi and jarring as Holland! **"If We're Gonna Go with More White Guys...."** \- Okkervil River -- great, jaunty indie rock bops especially off stage names. Lead singer Will Sheff sings clearly, no shoegazy-mumbles. Their biggest album in the indie scene was Black Sheep Boy but i'd say Unless it's Kicks is a good starter. \- Bisexual gem Of Montreal!! I have some other thoughts but I gotta go. If this was cringe, remember, I'm a millennial so it's par for the course :) Later!
