First Impressions: Thieaudio Monarch I’ve spent the better part of three years trying out some budget-fi and mid-fi gear before settling on a pair of ER2’s and Momentum 3’s as my go to pairs for either casual listening or commuting. To be honest, I would never have bitten the bullet on these if I hadn’t gotten to try them first. I happened to pass by Audio46 in Manhattan, and they had received a shipment very recently. No open box ones to demo, but one of the store clerks had a personal pair he deemed his endgame. He let me demo them, and the rest was history. The first thing that stood out was the soundstage. The depth was unlike anything I had experienced previously for an IEM. I didn’t even know you could get this kind of height either outside of binaural audio. I know most of it is FR tricks but it was amazing on first try. It’s great to just close your eyes and picture where in space the instruments lie. After a week of listening as a commuter pair, I really grew to love the bass boost. It’s so unique because the mid bass and lower mids almost get hidden behind it but it’s fun to me. Key word almost. The detail retrieval is phenomenal, and the best I’ve tried so far. I don’t really know what else to say except it’s the clearest presentation I’ve ever had. It’s also not fatiguing either. The fit is fine for me, and the cable makes it tempting to take the IEMs everywhere. I’m not gonna risk making this my daily all the time, but it’s the best portable audio experience I’ve ever had. Maybe my audio journey is finished here, but who knows really (because this is an expensive ass hobby and QC is sometimes suspect).
