i do a lot of disco/80s too. some tips * 99.9% of disco has no drum machine. That means you cannot trust your beatgrid or your analyzed BPM. Set the BPM on your tracks by tapping but be aware that that's not really gonna stick, it's just for speed reference when selecting tracks. Obviously this means sync and blends longer than a few bars are out unless you get skilled with pitch riding. * I've rarely heard nu-disco worked into a 70s disco set well. It's mostly just house with strings and slap bass. That's fine, but it can be jarring to hear mixed with old-disco and difficult because it's so much faster. I've also never heard a nu-disco track good enough to warrant not playing the old-disco track it reminds me of... * I am directly countering another comment here: absolutely whatever you do you must NOT lean heavily on Saturday Night Fever, ABBA, Bee Gees, or Donna Summer. Definitely play those - no disco night is complete without Gimme Gimme Gimme or I Feel Love - but keep in mind that most of that stuff is well known because it was popular on the radio so it doesn't always make for the best dance music. * No need to listen to current disco mixes to find tracks and hear mixing techniques. [Here is a large archive of recordings of actual 1970s disco sets.](https://hearthis.at/sfdps/) Shazam or typing lyrics into google will usually find it for you. * Disco was not dead by the 80s, and 80s disco is not remotely hard to find. It's just called a different thing. Look up playlists based on the music played at the Paradise Garage and the Warehouse and you'll find a lot of late disco, boogie, hi-nrg, and early house that's all still so disco-influenced that you can throw it right in and nobody will notice. Try Love Sensation by Loleatta Holloway and First True Love Affair (Larry Levan Mix) by Jimmy Ross, both 80-81. * Disco also only really died in America. Reissue labels are rereleasing incredible Brazilian and African disco/boogie records all the time. [Here is my absolute favorite playlist for this](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0xx7mBnUd5CvWlckxN7WpF?si=74c08d65035644d1) \- really is all killer no filler. That Ahmed Fakroun - Soleil Soleil is guaranteed success and so is Burkina Faso by Gyedu-Blay Ambolley. * For the 80s: always try the 12"/extended mix, they aren't just longer but structurally better for DJs. Sometimes you have a lot of mixes to choose from, particularly with ZTT acts like Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Don't assume they're all the same because a lot of them suck and you should really just play the album version. This is where cue points get useful for skipping past misguided breakdowns and reminding you when you need to mix out to avoid an overlong outro. * The 80s end as soon as the FDA approves Prozac in December 1987. That means be very careful with 1988-89, we associate a lot of the dance hits from then with the 90s. Pump Up The Jam, Theme from S-Express, Good Life, and Buffalo Stance all get played alongside stuff from 1984 by DJs who don't know this and it always works badly, it creates this massive jump in energy that they can't maintain with the slower pace of most 80s dance. * It's worth tracking down some remixes from remix services like Razormaid and Art of Mix. Those are what a lot of DJs in the 80s actually played, particularly in the late 80s. They're often noticeably better on the dancefloor & more versatile than the original mix. Problem is they're hard to track down due to being DJ-only and mostly vinyl-only, though rips and CDs do exist. Definitely gettable but quality and legality are up to you. good luck!
