I'm a huge disco fan and although I wasn't around for the actual movement (born '92), I've done a ton of research on it and most of the Vinyl I own is Disco. I'm at work and can't write a ton right now but I'll give an overview of what I believe are relevant talking points (I can't speak as much for funk other than George Clinton's projects and James Brown's work are the archetypes): Disco started in the mid 70's and many seem to consider 'Disco Demolition Night' in '79 in Chicago as the "death of disco". There are a ton of podcasts and videos and writeups about this - super interesting topic. I will say that a bunch of 'classic' Disco was actually released thru the early-mid-'80's. It's interesting to look at what was happening with Rock at this time, and how Hip Hop popped up 'afterwards' - often sampling and looping disco breaks. With the information available to us, if we look back, I think it's clear that Disco never really 'died', but in its purest form, evolved into Chicago/Detroit House. I personally got into Disco when I was researching Daft Punk / French House samples around 2009. There are (so many) both sonic and structural borrowings from Disco both in this specific subgenre and across almost all dance music (even today) that the influence is undeniable. Apologies for jumping around, but it appears Jamiroquai's sound carried the torch for 'real' discofunk in the 90's but I don't think there was a true 'movement' at that time. Disco is alive and well today (seems to be mostly out of NY) with acts like Escort, Adeline, and Holy Ghost!. "Funky" is definitely the overarching theme which describes the most infectious Disco tunes. A few of the most notable artists would be Chic/Nile Rogers, Donna Summer/Giorgio Mororder, and KC and the Sunshine Band. [Here's my massive Spotify playlist of what I consider the best classic Disco songs - curated after years of listening to exclusively Studio 54 radio.](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13e9kIyniJ2gHy8TVANy0T?si=CB8tC_9aSEGNQWdXXTHyvg) I'll try to update with more when I have time - sorry this is super condensed.
