I listen to lots of weird electronic music, hip hop, etc on my own time. In the OR, my default is a mix with a lot of classic R&B (Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Aretha, Stevie), a sprinkling of modern R&B (Michael, Prince), some hip hop inflected stuff (Fugees, Mary J Blige), Funk (The JBs, Meters) , Blues (Taj Mahal, John Lee Hooker), Reggae and some broadly appealing electronic (Nightmares on Wax, RJd2, Bonobo). The guiding principle is generally upbeat, inoffensive music that is both broadly appealing and doesn’t suck. I also have a more vanilla mix with lots of Southern classic rock (Allman Brothers, Little Feat, Black Crowes). But with WiFi and Spotify, I’m happy to go more vulgar/ratchet/loud if that’s what everyone likes. I generally avoid metal, as even if the surgeon likes it, there’s always somebody pissed off if that’s what is playing.
