OH! I just made a playlist for this exact scenario for my friend Casey from the band Virginity https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1Y9KXN9cvtPU8lcG9PAEaB?si=clI1iGUCS6ipV75B8LNEQQ I've cherry picked all of my favorite songs spanning the entirety of the legally available catalogue available to us on my streaming service of choice, Spotify. A lot of the stuff that isn't available has been re-recorded as part of their off-cycle Grandma series, which are releases named after...you guessed it, their grandma's. Ann & Rose are solid releases that reimagine their early work and breathe new life into it, which is a great way to help make sure they don't get absolutely fucking sick of playing songs they wrote ten years ago live to a bunch of sweaty brats in divebars.  Here's a little about each song and what I love about them and what I think makes each of these songs great. Spoiler alert: I'm a sucker for lyrics and a voice that is more emotive than technically "good" lol. 1. West Virginia: First of all, there was no way that I wasn't starting this playlist with this    song simply because it starts out acoustic and becomes this full on riff heavy banger that fully sums up my favorite era of this band. They were really vibing with the idea of "rock & roll" around the time they released Back On Top and I honestly think it's the best bulk of songs this band has ever and will ever release. This song especially: riff heavy monstrosity and I absolutely love the lyrics: "Like I said, I thought I was focused. I thought I had it figured out -- how to organize my words good before they fall right out my mouth. I had no map, the direction I was walking was so wrong. I just need a little help here, man. To find the path I should be on. Love of my life. Gone forever. Love of my life. Gone for good."  Wolfman: This is the best song that any human person has ever written in the history of songwriting. I'm sorry but nothing will ever fucking top this song. I have cried so many times hearing the lyrics "Say what you have to say. Try not to cry. This is just not what you wanted at this point in your life. It's so hard to stay when all you wanna do is ride. I totally get you, I was a birdcage and you were meant to fly." ALSO hearing Brian yell "I sunk til I came out of it" like OKAY YOU DID NOT HAVE TO COME FOR ME THIS HARD BUT YOU DID AND I THANK YOU FOR IT.  Everything I Own: I have a history of not appreciating the back half of a The Front Bottoms album enough on my first handful of listens. This is the closing track to the band's 2013 sophomore album Talon Of The Hawk -- and I don't think I really gave it a shot until...2017. I immediately felt like an idiot and this has quickly become one of my all time favorite songs by this band. The organ!? The line "God forbid I ever stop feeling sorry for myself being selfish?" The song feels like a romantic comedy playing out in less than five minutes and honestly? That's the fucking songwriting I'm here for, baby. Vacation Town: Yo okay this song slaps front to back. Sorry bout it. The weird trap drums that people were upset about were definitely a choice, but fuck the haters. The second verse of this song hits so fucking hard. Read: "I wanna see everything, lay it out all for me. Feel the breeze, with all the windows open in a one star hotel room. But I can only express my love when I'm fucked up or far far away. Physically another continent. Emotionally another headspace. Mentally I'm not even here." Also, these lyrics will be coming back around pretty soon...which made me love that fucking verse EVEN MORE.  Be Nice To Me: This is the first of the re-recorded old songs. It's fun and carefree kind of jaunty and a little stupid. It's a good time. Also Brian howls when he sings the word werewolf and that really just puts a smile on my face every time.  Camouflage:  This song inspired a piece that I'm really excited to be working on, but is also the one thing unifying fans new and old. I don't get why people ever fell off, but cool this is the song that's bringing them back in. This is the cleanest and most powerful songwriting Brian's ever showcased. I fully cannot believe the lyrics "Sour, but I think I like it. Fruit from the profane communion. Who knew I would even try it. Now I wear camouflage to blend in" came from this band. This is also where the second verse to Vacation Town  comes back around. Brian speaks: "All the time I talk about vacation like it’s all we got in common. Just let me take you on vacation, just like I promised. I mean, obviously I'm distant. I'm a thousand miles away. Obviously it's tense. There's nothing else to say. I am so loosely connected in a couple different ways. And I may not act like it, but I think I love the taste.  The Beers: This is, like, everyone's favorite song by this band. It's hard to deny the power of it. I cried when I heard it live. I fell in love when I heard it for the first time. I've written about it before, but hearing this story of heartache and willingness to change for love as Brian's voice careens through a sea of broken notes. It's just -- chef's kisses all around, baby. "My friends are happy I am happy. I have learned to adapt. It's a darker kind of humor, but I can still hear 'em laugh."  Somebody Else: Keep It Simple Stupid. This song riffs hard. The end. This is an old song that they re-recorded and added these fat fucking shreds to. Tattooed Tears: Another broad stroke of genius for this band. I don't want to sound lazy and repetitive, but I can't get enough of the way this guy writes. I don't know what my favorite part is. Either: "I'm gonna have to learn that this love will never be convenient. It's not like a movie when we kiss. There'll never be no music when we kiss" OR "Let's talk about how it felt on my shoulders as it came pouring out my ears. Let's talk about the face of our love and how it might look with the addition of tattooed tears. Let's talk about the torn up skin on my fingers right where it meets my fingernails. Let's talk about how what you call sliding carefully is seriously slipping out of control."  Tie Dye Dragon: At the end of each grandma album, they release a brand new song. Tie Dye Dragon came at the tail end of Ann. There's a lot to love here -- the marriage of sounds old and new, Brian's cathartic yelps in verse 2, the way the music starts to swell around the orchestral delivery of "I am guided by confused light" and "I guess I'm older now, I am caught in between who I am and who I'm supposed to be. Everything's confusing." This song is actual black magic.  Plastic Flowers: The closing track to my favorite album of all time. Plastic Flowers is both hopeful and nihilistic -- begging that everything is fine because someone has a plan for you but that this is also the reason your whole life is an absolute fucking dumpster fire. There's beauty in the trash heap, baby, you just gotta get past the smell. The spoken break is what sells it for me: "Okay everybody shut the fuck up a minute I have something to say. Just because it burns bright doesn't mean it’s gonna burn forever. So all these people around you saying you got so much further to go, it's gonna get worse before it gets better -- I don't know, I don't know if that's true." Sometimes, I want to hear that not everybody is force feeding me a dose of "it'll all work out." Let me sit in my feelings for a minute. Let me process. Sometimes being alive absolutely fucking sucks. Let me fucking feel that for a second so I can learn to appreciate the moments where being alive absolutely fucking rules, dude.  Thanks for coming to my TedXTalk.
