Michael Jackson is a popular one for cover bands as is Stevie Wonder. For classic rock stuff, Journey, Van Halen, Guns N Roses, and AC/DC are good ones to know the hits from. This will probably be overwhelming, but the more you learn, the easier it is to learn more so just take it one song at a time.
