Woooohoo this is my wheelhouse! :D I'm a Japanese folk musician! I play tsugaru-jamisen (a traditional 3 stringed lute) and listen to tons of music that utilizes it. Some amazing musicians in traditional folk music music (skewed towards the Tsugaru folk side of things) are Oyama Yutaka (小山豊）, Oyama Mitsugu（小山貢）, Masahiro Nitta（新田昌弘）, Hiroshi Nitta(新田弘志） (together they form Nitta Oyako 新田親子), Hayate (疾風、an ensemble produced by the younger brother of the Yoshida brothers), Hiromitsu Agatsuma（上妻宏光）, Katsuji Sawada(澤田勝司）, Oyama x Nitta (a collab between Masahiro and Yutaka as mentioned above), The Shibata Siblings （柴田三兄弟）(Ai 柴田愛, Yuri 柴田佑梨, and Masato Shibata 柴田雅人), as previously mentioned, the Yoshida Brothers, Takahashi Chikuzan（高橋竹山）, Ki&Ki (輝＆輝）(Kanami Takeda and Hikari Shirafuji), and so many more. Many are available on spotify. And if you'd like some fusion, try out some NHK Blends for covers of western songs, Wagakki Band （和楽器バンド）for rock, or Kurofune (黒船） for jazz, for starters. Some of those I mentioned above do both traditional and modern as well, fusing the two in some pieces.
