Check out the recent Ken Burns documentary, [Country Music](https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/country-music/). (It's streaming on PBS, and I think it was up on Kanopy for a while. Your local library might have the DVDs too.) It's long, but still only covers up to the mid '90s, when pop country really took off. But the tension between "real country" and commercial country is an ongoing theme throughout the series.
