Lol I love this. I wish you luck and would love to hear what you find. College was a time of finding myself, and it sounds like Frank is going through something similar. It's almost bizarre that if the music is so great, instead of evangelizing, he wants to keep it a secret. But I guess if people start hearing about it, he'll have to find an even more niche category of music. I did find many promising leads, including some that probably line up with what he's referring to. * In 2011, The Village Voice said that the band [Orphan](https://www.houstonpress.com/music/crowbar-6593170)—and in particular its frontman Brendan Majewski—left a legacy of "acidic gunk-metal muck." * In 2012, the Houston Press called the mid-90's band [Crowbar](https://www.houstonpress.com/music/crowbar-6593170) "New Orleans gunk-metal." * There's a recent posting of a metal band on Soundcloud named, aptly enough, [Gunk](https://soundcloud.com/harpazorestrainer/gunk-brain-injury). * Soundcloud also has a few playlists where "gunk" is used in describing it: [Alt/PPunk/Gunk/MetalTrap](https://soundcloud.com/3thvn/sets/alt-ppunk-gunk-metaltrap) and [Solid Gunk](https://soundcloud.com/ibo-rodriguez/solid-gunk-ibo-rodriguez-montana-jose-junkyard-connection-whack-family-records-2011). * Spotify also has a few playlists that use the word "gunk," specifically [Nu Metal Gunk](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4xnitms02lhOD5Zi2xTgkS) and [Metal Rock Gunk](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2rchmLgv4To0WBnrLpsDkl). * eBay also has a few of the most promising leads, with albums for sale labeled "gunk" by the artists [Pissrot](https://www.ebay.com/itm/165720906290), [Steel Trees](https://www.ebay.com/itm/363970203491), [Cryptworm](https://www.ebay.com/itm/333766434562), and [Forgodsake](https://www.ebay.com/itm/354306126236). * [Searching discogs.com for "gunk metal"](https://www.discogs.com/search/?q=gunk+metal&type=all) also returns a ton of results, including some of the bands named above, along with plenty of others, such as [Disembodiment](https://www.discogs.com/artist/2058536-Disembodiment), [O.L.D.](https://www.discogs.com/artist/54254-OLD), and [Broken Collarbone](https://www.discogs.com/artist/6527615-Broken-Collarbone). I did not listen to these yet, so I can't offer any kind of insight into what makes music "gunk metal," though the list above include bands from the 90s through today that span many subgenres of rock and metal. I'm inclined to believe that multiple types of music can be categorized as "gunk metal." The etymology might be something like "groove funk metal," making me wonder if it means an EDM-influenced and rhythmically complex form of metal. However, especially with the first two links above, "gunk" also seems to refer to literal dirt and messiness, perhaps making it adjacent to genres of rough, "dirty" rock, such as sludge metal, doom metal, and stoner rock. At a glance, my hunch is the most promising bands of everything named above are Pissrot, Steel Trees, and Cryptworm.
