Such a funny way to ask the question - love it! I'm going to go with the 4 songs that were instrumental (no pun intended) in building the foundations of my love for the genre. **Pelican - Drought** I was about 15 years old when Australasia by Pelican came out and my interest in rock music had fully formed with me teaching myself how to play the guitar, starting a band and subscribing to a few guitar and rock magazines. I remember Australasia picking up universal praise from all of the magazines and immediately purchasing the album to understand the hype. I didn't get it entirely (especially as there were no vocals throughout the whole album and my attention span was that of a 15 year old). The one song I did get though was Drought. I could not stop playing it. It was like nothing I had ever heard before and the seed was firmly planted that instrumental music was a thing that could be absolutely mindblowing. --- **65daysofstatic - I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood** I remember hearing this song on a Rock Sound magazine CD and feeling gutted that I couldn't find a guitar tab for it, so I tabbed it out myself. I listened to the song so many times while trying to tab it out that it is now ingrained in the very fabric of my being. I have followed 65daysofstatic ever since hearing this song and I can undoubtedly place them up there as one my favourite bands of all time. When they performed this song live during a full performance of The Fall of Math back in 2014 it transported me back to my childhood bedroom and reminded me how many times I've actually heard it. Despite that, it still stands the test of time with me personally and is one of the best songs the post-rock genre has ever produced. --- **This Will Destroy You - Burial on the Presidio Banks** Whenever anybody asks me what my favourite album is it is a very easy question for me to answer. It is This Will Destroy You's self-titled and I'm not sure anything will ever top it for me personally. I could easily write a thesis about this album and what it means to me, but I'll save that for another time. Burial on the Presidio Banks is a perfect song. It is beautiful. It is crushing. It is a song that evokes imagery of a slowly burning ember that grows into an unstoppable forest fire, razing everything to the ground. Yet it leaves you with the feeling that something beautiful will grow again in the wake of its devastation. It is symbolic of what this song did for my personal music journey. It completely transformed my music tastes as I explored the genre that this song was born from. I attended my first of many post-rock festivals and travelled to some remote village in Belgium, simply because I wanted to see This Will Destroy You. I met other post-rock fans and asked them for recommendations, which led me to this next song... --- **Sigur Rós - Untitled #8 (Popplagið)** My hairs stand on end every time I hear those opening notes of Untitled #8. I would have said Burial on the Presidio Banks is the greatest closing track of any album, but that would be false, as Untitled #8 is every bit its equal. It completes the magical journey of the ( ) album with a fantastic left turn at the 6 minute mark that plunges the song in to the depths of despair. The whole album builds towards this moment. In a genre that is famed for its crescendos, it seems fitting that I celebrate the greatest crescendo of all. --- Thanks for posting this question :) I've really enjoyed reflecting on these songs this morning. It's been a long time since I've really sat down and just appreciated these songs for what they are to me.
