Complaining about "Narrator" and exulting in "Hard Drive" reminds me of two of the projects I had burbling in the back half of the year. Much as I cut *Rattle and Hum* into a manageable size and attempted--as all of us have attempted--to smush *Kid A* and *Amnesiac* into a coherent forty-five minutes, I got a little carried away with *Bright Green Field* and *An Overview on Phenomenal Nature.* [*Slightly Dimmer Green Field*](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5lVw9wklVDny6EyQNjXGRW?si=e38af2a73a314245) is the *Lovetown*--I've argued that the album is too long and also many of the songs in particular are too long. Too many extended code. In addition to scrambling the set order and cutting a few tracks, I've also subbed in the edited single versions of "Narrator" and "Pamphlets." I have kept the full "Paddling" because I actually like that one all the way thru, and in any case most of the excised material in the b-side version of "Paddling" is intro, not coda. Also "Boy Racers" is still here. The first three minutes of that song are great and the last four minutes are, you know, okay. [*Phenomenal Natures*](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4ZzuHMMfhdvob7oFKdYJUp?si=db4f850a9bcc4b51) is the *Morning Bells*--my main issues (and in retrospect these are weak issues) with the original *Overview* were that it was a) too short, and as a result b) "The Ramble" took up what felt like an undue amount of the record's limited runtime. This one extends that album by including some of the material from *(An Overview on) An Overview,* and rearranges it so that there are, uh, more peaks and valleys, energy-wise. This one does not work quite as well. Including both versions of "Hard Drive" is certainly a Choice, and it works rather well for me, personally, but it's not the boldest aesthetic decision I've ever made; meanwhile, incorporating the "(interlude)" version of "Crosshairs" over the final cut is, uh, kind of me working at cross-purposes to my own intentions, even if "Crosshairs" is a song I'm warm-neutral on at best. I stand by including the early versions of "Hailey" (again, more peaks and valleys) and "New Bikini" (indie gospel, maybe? I'm definitely going longform on that one eventually I think I've cornered myself into it at this point). It's an interesting experiement--flawed, certainly, but it was fun to pore over and now I think I like the original album more, so that's worth something.
