Thank you for this thoughtful response. It's encouraging. I actually do use music to try and learn. Sometimes I try Jaya or Regine Velazquez in karaoke, lol. I made a translated list of Filipino R&B and dance music Spotify with Musixmatch so that I can read the English translations to the lyrics (this list I posted earlier: https://open.spotify.com/user/1224401565/playlist/6CGEtQORTXx5qF0YBCBawa). It helps. I'm still looking for more upbeat dance pop and R&B. Thank you for the book and poem recommendations. I will look into what you mentioned. I especially want to read the poetry because the language is already pretty poetic I think with repetition in the verb conjugations, etc. Yeah, the colorism issue is pretty worldwide. I guess the degree of how bad it is probably depends on the society though, right? In China, I used to get the equivalent of what you mentioned. The "ε“‡οΌŒ δ½ θΏ™δΉˆη™½β€œ (whoa, you're so white/light) and things like that. I've tanned up since then and I'm glad no one has said that in a long time. Unfortunately, it was also similar in black American society in the first half of the 20th century before my time in terms of making comments about light or dark skin and treating light people better. It was to the point where you'd only see light black Americans who looked like WEB DuBois or Lena Horne in prominent positions...maybe a little like the Philippines. We have gotten a lot better in that regard to the point where it's shameful now for someone to praise the lightness of someone's skin because to us, it represents giving into the oppressor and disrespecting our roots. That took many decades to get to that point though as a result of several movements that took place. How is the racism weird though? You mean in terms of nationality affecting the degree of racism? Yep. I have tried Filipino food here in the US. I introduced my husband and my mother to it. My favorite is any stuff made out of taro or coconut milk. He says it's his second favorite food now and my mother likes the barbecue. She thought it was soul food at first because I didn't tell her until she ate it since she's finicky. None of us have tried balut. Thanks again for the info!
