There is a western equivalent to citypop. Some random guys on the internet made a parody series on it. The name of the series became a subgenre of it's own. The name? Yacht rock. Stuff like the Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates, Fleetwood Mac and all the other cheesy songs from the late 70s and early 80s. What does this have to do with Citypop? Well these songs were very popular in Japan and heavily influenced Citypop. 90% of yacht compilations come from Japan and this is why.
