1. What do you think your greatest strength is as a writer? (Character voice, prose, subtext, etc.) I think my dialogue is very good. I’m not sure why that is, I just think there is a nice verisimilitude to it. 2. Do you remember what first sparked the idea for your book? (A character archetype you wanted to play with, a setting, a plot concept, etc.) The nebulous idea of “fantasy lawyers” using legal based magicks combined with a trip to Exmoor in a dreary February weekend and reading Robert Harris’s Imperium. 3. Are there any songs you associate with your story and/or main characters? Not a specific song, but I did make an Empire of the Wolf playlist of music which I listened to when writing the trilogy: [Link](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6icr9B0kQFGwKfny1kOlc3?si=8c85cd6c66014a0f) 4. Similarly, what food do you think best represents your story? Something basic like meat pie and ale for those cold winter months (although Vonvalt would probably rather a glass of red wine or brandy) 5. If you could go back in time and give your younger self one piece of writing advice, what would it be? Stay the course; you’ll get there in the end. 6. Any advice on writing blurbs and/or queries? And if your path to publication involved querying agents: would you be willing to share the query that got you your agent's representation? *Dear Harry,* *Please find attached for your consideration Emperor’s Justice, a medieval fantasy epic of around 100,000 words which I think does slot nicely into your bailiwick.* *Emperor’s Justice is told through the eyes of Helena Sedanka, the clerk to and protégée of Sir Konrad Vonvalt. Sir Konrad is the titular Emperor’s Justice, a fantastical combination of C J Sansom’s Matthew Shardlake and Robert Harris’ Cicero, blessed with the powers of both a medieval Judge Dredd and Andrzej Sapkowski’s Geralt of Rivia. In essence, he is an Imperial policeman, mage and itinerant court rolled into one.* *During the course of a murder investigation, word reaches Sir Konrad that his authority, and the supremacy of the order of the Justices itself, is being challenged by a cabal of Imperial politicians and templar knights who are hungry for the order’s arcane powers. Helena, an orphan plucked from obscurity by Sir Konrad, is struggling to adapt to her new life of power and privilege; now she must come to terms with the fact that the nascent Empire is fracturing—and as the clerk to one of its most revered—and hated—Justices, she is standing in the very centre of the gathering storm.* *The intended audience of Emperor’s Justice is readers of serious western medieval fantasy who enjoy strong characters, moral grey areas, and a good political and legal thriller.* *As for myself, I am a commercial litigator by trade. I used to work in London but I am currently taking a year out in Australia with my wife and infant son. I have been writing for many years and I have self-published a series of science fiction novels and associated spinoff short stories and novellas, which have enjoyed some moderate success (around 12,000 combined sales and free downloads). Emperor’s Justice is my first attempt at having a novel traditionally published.* *For information, the novel’s only extant submission was in response to an open call by John Joseph Adams books In February. I am yet to hear back.* *Thank you for your consideration.* *Kind regards* *Richard*
