For me, the ultimate is the [No Alternative](https://www.discogs.com/Various-No-Alternative/master/11604) compilation from the early 90's. Most of the bands it features were well known at the time, but not as massively successful as they would be just two years after this album was released. The [Singles](https://www.discogs.com/Various-Singles-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/master/11575) Soundtrack also comes to mind. The soundtrack was definitely better than the movie. Both the film and album celebrated the national infatuation with Seattle at the time. Even though some artists on the album were not from Seattle, they still embodied the spirit of the scene. Of all the African psychedelic rock albums [Love's A Real Thing (The Funky Fuzzy Sounds Of West Africa)](https://www.discogs.com/Various-Loves-A-Real-Thing-The-Funky-Fuzzy-Sounds-Of-West-Africa/master/54363) is my favorite. Maybe it's just sentimental from the time of my life when I bought it, but it's just so damn good. [There Is No Eye: Music For Photographs](https://www.discogs.com/Various-There-Is-No-Eye-Music-For-Photographs/release/3238749) is just a great collection of some of the most prominent American folk musicians of all time. It has a great story behind it which you can read if you go [here](https://folkways.si.edu/there-is-no-eye-music-for-photographs/american-folk-world/album/smithsonian). BONUS: Very recently I found [this playlist on Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6oB7jsAlaZW15x3ldoNoWa?si=oLnY8ZKFRDGD5VFjLHuuLQ) that collected all of the songs from the CMJ music monthly discs. CMJ was a music magazine that came out in the 90's and had a CD attached to the back page. Before the internet, this was how I got a lot of new music leads. It's a great time capsule of the late 90's, of a lot of various genres.
