I typically reccomend Tame Impala for people who are just getting into psychedelic rock. Among the 4 albums by the artist i would say theres likely something for everyone in there. -Innerspeaker calls back to classic 60s psych in sound and arrangement with fuzzed out guitars and droney yet moving soundscapes -Lonerism is my personal fav and i would say that its the most psychedelic, again calling back to common tropes of earlier psych such as extended jam sections with trippy effects like reverb and phasers, while also pushing the boundaries of the genre and keeping it entertaining the whole way through -Currents has a much more refined and polished sound, with more focus on production and songwriting. It leans more towards a poppier style than the previous 2 records while remaining very psychedelic -The Slow Rush is by far the poppiest and therefore possibly the most accessible with more 'radio-friendly' songs. A natural progression from Currents, this album boasts very impressive production and knowledge of music theory and songwriting without ever sounding overly complicated. Its all relatively accessible as far as psych rock goes and was also a major catalyst for other psych bands that have formed since Tame's first couple releases. If you dig that then i would suggest checking out other bands that the dude from Tame Impala had been affiliated with, such as Pond, Melody's Echo Chamber, Mink Mussel Creek and honestly many more, just gotta do some digging based on what you like. The "fans also like" section of an artists spotify page is imo the best way to find new music that exists nowadays, spotify's algorithms are top notch i think. Other bands/artists that i first got into when i initially started listening to psych are Post Animal, The Holydrug Couple, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Babe Rainbow, Methyl Ethyl, Dumbo Gets Mad, MGMT, Sunbeam Sound Machine... the list goes on and on... Since 2018 ive been compiling an enourmous playlist of my ventures through the surprisingly vast modern psych community: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6y5LSLw0HPQJsZm7KqCUt7?si=ry6sXuKbTtm3JYt-y_hTvg&utm_source=copy-link If you wanna go further back however to bands that paved the way for modern psych then theres heaps of amazing bands from the 60s/70s that a lot of folks have heard of but havent necessarily done a deep dive into. For this category id say to start with The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys, The Zombies, The Doors and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Like any genre of music theres an inumerable amount of subgenres and stylistic overlap thatll lead you down endless rabbit holes of obscure artists and niches. Enjoy :)
